Tool Steel Developed for Tough Forming Apps
The SLD-i cold work tool steel is
available in flat cross sections
up to 5 inches thick.
As there is an increasing number of parts being
produced with advanced high-strength steels
(AHSS), die makers are being faced with the
difficult demands associated with producing
tools that can handle these materials in stamp-
ing operations.
SLD-i cold work tool steel has been devel-
oped to address these demands; the material,
according to Diehl Tool Steel ( diehlsteel.
com ), a subsidiary of Hitachi Metals America,
the developer of the material, the SLD-i is
produced using the same heat treatment as D2
material but exhibits better wear and tough-
ness when used for forming and trim section.
In addition to which, it exhibits better wear
than 8 percent Cr steels for specific draw
sections of large dies.
