AD&P; > July 2014 > NOTABLE 22 Bosch Is Bullish on DI Gasoline direct injection implemen- tation is already on the rise and is expected to gain even more energy going forward, thanks in large part to global demands for improved fuel efciency. Evi- dence: in 2012, Robert Bosch GmbH ( bosch. com ) supplied >5-million direct injection systems, and by 2015 the company plans on supply- ing 9-million systems. There was considerable deployment of direct injection in Europe in 2013, with some 40% of new cars equipped with the technology, according to Dr. Rolf Bulander of Bosch, who is responsible for power- train technology, "In a few years' time, a lot of the action will also be taking place in America and China." Consider the fact that more than 90% of the cars in the U.S. market are gasoline-powered, not diesel fuel powered, so there is a bigger deployment pool than in Europe (according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, in 2013, 53.3% of new car regis- trations in Western Europe were for diesels). p How Bosch sees the future of gasoline direct injection. 0714ADP Notable -- Digital Version.indd 22 6/17/2014 1:14:02 PM
