ON MANUFACTURING GEAR SCARA Robot Denso, the automotive supplier, actually pro- duces products that are used to produce its products. Which leads us to Peter Cavallo, robotics sales manager, Denso Products & Services Americas, who says, "Our new HSR robot rep- resents the culmination of 50 years of experience in developing industrial robot arms to meet our own manufacturing needs in the highly competitive automotive sector." This is a four-axis SCARA robot. Because it was developed for automo- tive-volume production, it is designed to operate quickly and continuously. Contributing to that is a light-weight arm with an optimized structure, which helps contribute to reduced shaft whip and settling time. The elec- trical wiring are embedded in the arm, which provides not only a compact footprint, but avoids interference with peripherals. The standard cycle time with a 2-kg weight is from 0.28 to 0.31 sec. and repeatability is from ±0.01 to ±0.12 mm. Maximum payload capacity is 8 kg, with available reaches of 480, 550 and 650 mm. densorobotics.com Milling & Turning Tools Cutting tool and tooling system specialist Sandvik Coromant has developed tools for those who are involved in milling as well as those performing turning, with the CoroMill 745 face milling cutter and the CoroTurn Prime multi-task and axial type tool holders to help machine shops implement the new PrimeTurning methodology, which enables turning in all directions. The milling cutter features a 25° entering angle for productivity gains when milling steel and cast iron workpieces. A high-feed version facilitates high metal removal rates (MRR) in applications with depths of cut up to 2.8 mm (0.110 inch)—and even when running at high MRR, there is said to be no compromise to surface finish. The CoroMill 745 was developed for roughing to semi-finish- ing operations and can be used in large batch production of parts including valves and engine blocks. Matts Westin, product manager, said, "An important benefit of the new cutter is low cost per edge from its double-sided, 14-edge insert design. In fact, purchasing departments will be pleased to learn that tool inventory costs are reduced because the CoroMill 745 with a 25° entering angle uses the same inserts as its counterpart cutter with a 42° entering angle." As for the CoroTurn tool holders, they are designed for use on multi-task turn-mill centers and vertical turning lathes. For example, there is the Prime Twin tool holder that is specifically designed for multitasking; it can handle inserts for both roughing and finishing. Says Håkan Ericksson, product manager, General Turning, "Modern multi-task machines are intended for the complete machining of components but typically have a slow tool changing time, often around 15 to 20 seconds. As a result, the new Twin holder will save customers a considerable amount of time when changing tools." sandvik.coromant.com U.S. POSTAL SERVICE STATEMENT OF OWNERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND CIRCULATION (Required by 39 U.S.C. 3685) 1.
