While the weight saving potential of advanced materials – such as aluminum,
high strength steels, and composites – is widely known, production difficulties
and high costs prevent their extensive usage for the entire car body. Utilizing the
most appropriate material for each application and component shows to be the
most efficient lightweight strategy. However the adaptation of each part design and
their assembly, while ensuring the performance of the multi-material assembled
component is very challenging. Virtual prototyping can support optimal light-
weight design with the latest advances in joining technologies, with the capability
to predict the performances of the multi-material component. As lightweight is
the target, no over engineering or excessive margin can be taken.
PRIMARY TOPICS:
• Replace metal by composites for weight reduction
• Design of a composite Front Bumper Crush-Can System using Virtual Prototyping
• Meet component design targets, lightweight objective and constraints
• Analyze real crash tests and virtual crash test using standard models and advanced
composite crash models from USCAR partners
SPEAKER BIO:
Alain Tramecon is product manager for Composite Performance simulation
and of Virtual Prototyping Centers of Excellence (incl . Multimaterial assembly,
composite End to End Virtual Prototyping), in charge of transverse innovation
projects. He has more than 25 years in crash, structural performance and fluid
structure interaction simulation.
