Cruze: Three-Million
and Counting
Although its cross-town competitor emphasizes its
global unity based on the digit one, General Motors is
doing a pretty good job of having a global reach for
singular products, with the Chevrolet Cruze being a
prime example.
The Cruze is produced in 11 different countries and sold
in 118.
There are full assembly operations in the U.S., Brazil,
Russia, China, South Korea, and Australia. There
are complete knockdown (CKD) plants in Venezuela,
India, Thailand, and Vietnam. And there is a
semiknockdown (SKD) plant in Kazakhstan.
We bring this up because the Cruze, which was
introduced in 2008, has passed the 3-millionth sales
mark, which is no small accomplishment.
The single biggest market for the Cruze: China,
where more than 1.13 million have been sold. The
U.S. is second, with over 900,000.
It should be noted that while the Cruze in the U.S.
is a sedan offered with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine, a
1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, or a 2.0-liter
turbodiesel, it is also offered as a five-door hatchback
and station wagon with two additional engines, a 1.6-
liter gasoline and 1.7-liter diesel.
In addition to which, in the China market the 2015
Cruze that launched there in August (it features more
of a fast-back design with shorter front and rear
overhangs) is not the 2015 model available in the U.S.,
though it is rumored that it might be the 2016 model
in the U.S.—which is highly plausible, given the global
basis of the car.
