Timing Chain Reduces
Friction, Boosts MPGs
While 0.3 to 0.6% isn't a heck of a lot, when you're
chasing fuel-efciency improvements, every little bit
helps. Those are the numbers that BorgWarner Morse TEC
( borgwarner.com/en/morsetec ) says its 6.35-mm inverted
tooth engine timing chains are returning in terms of
fuel economy improvements for
engines ranging in size from 0.66
to 2.0 liters.
The chain's advantage: Not only
is the geometry to the link back
shape optimized so as to reduce the
contact area when the chain slides
along the arms and guides, a cause
of fuel-wasting friction, but they
have applied extensive fnishing
and polishing to the timing chains
to reduce friction as much as
practical.
What's more, according to Joe
Fadool, president and general
manager of the operation, the
"smaller-pitch engine timing chain
reduces friction while delivering
lower noise and improved
durability for these tough engine
environments."
The chains will launch on vehicles
from Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Hyundai,
GM, and an unnamed Chinese
automaker.
